The University of Edinburgh

Mechanical Engineering with Renewables, MEng

  Classification of Degree:                                    2:1
Thesis:  Wave and Tidal Tank Diffuser Design
       A

The University of Edinburgh is a world class institution rank as 15th in world. It has always been at the forefront of renewable energy development with such designs as Pelamis and the Salter's Duck. In my thesis I developed the conceptual design of a ground breaking wave and tidal tank which is due to be built at the university.

Work Experience

January-July 2010

Industrial Placement

Meng European Placement 4 in Duisburg, Germany.

The main assessment criteria for this placement set by my university (University of Edinburgh). The placement was within the the European initiative; ERASMUS. It was conducted at the University of Duisburg-Essen and at the research headquarters of Krohne Gmbh in Duisburg. Krohne is a world leader in flow meter devices, has branches on every continent and a turnover of 273 million euros (2007). Amongst a large portfolio of devices is the vortex flow meter. My supervisors were Professor Ernst von Lavante from the University of Duisburg-Essen and Mr Sylvain Toullion from Krohne GmbH. The objective of the project was to quantify the effect of pipe bends on the measurement accuracy of the Optiswirl vortex meter. Standard bend disturbances were to be investigated according to the definitions in Technische Richtlinien der PTB (1989) and of Legal Meterology (1989). I was tasked with producing table of correction values for calibration of the flow meter at various distances downstream. This was to be achieved through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, verified by experiment.

Part-time

2006-2010

Until cancelled because of lack of Government funding, I was a cadet in the Officer Training Corps. It is a part of the British Army that offers cadets the opportunity to learn about the army and potentially become a commissioned officer. It has given me the opportunity to develop my leadership skills and confidence, with numerous teambuilding exercises.

Summer and Easter Holidays 2007 and 2008 I worked as a summer assistant in a shooting lodge in Perthshire. The job entailed catering for friends of Lord and Lady Whittaker. This involved cleaning, food preparation and presentation, as well as outdoor activities such as driving jeeps, using ride-on mowers and tractors. The work demanded good communication skills, attention to detail and an ability to live in an isolated environment.

September 2005 –

July 2006

For my gap year I worked at the Hermann-Lietz Schule in Germany as an English teaching assistant. This involved providing one-to-one tuition to students requiring extra support, covering for absent teachers and running English conversation groups.

Key Skills At university I have developed a critical and innovative approach using fundamental design principals to solve engineering problems. This ability has stood me in good stead in this year’s group project, designing a wind turbine, where it was essential to analyse input from the group and to be able to justify my own views with sound argument.

Software I am proficient in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel Applications, both of which I have used extensively at University. I am also familiar with specialist software Solid Edge and MATLAB.

Languages I am fluent in German.

Other I have a full, clean driving licence.

Interests

I am a keen gymnast and a member of the university gymnastics club and have participated in UK gymnastics competitions.

I am an experienced sailor and windsurfer and have won a Scottish and Northern Ireland cadets regatta.

I have played the guitar since the age of 12.

I was an active member of the Dollar Academy Chess Club, participating with my school in the National Schools Competition for Chess.
